Research on the top 100,000 websites found roughly 37% reachable over IPv6 but only 12.6% fully functional once scripts, fonts, and CDNs are counted, so “the domain has an AAAA record” is not the same as “the page works.”

IPv6 is cheaper per address and effectively unlimited in supply. That advantage disappears entirely on a target that does not speak it, which is still most of the web.

The honest summary: if your targets are IPv6-ready, IPv6 is the cheaper way to buy exit capacity and you should use it. If they are not, IPv4 is not a compromise, it is the only thing that works. Why IPv6 proxies cost less than IPv4
IPv4 has about 4.3 billion addresses and they ran out. What is left trades on a secondary market, and a proxy provider buying IPv4 exit capacity is competing with every cloud host and every other provider for a fixed supply. That scarcity is the single largest input cost in an IPv4 proxy price, and it is why IPv4 pools are metered so carefully.
IPv6 has no such constraint. A single /64 allocation contains more addresses than the entire IPv4 internet, and a provider with one /48 can hand out unique exits effectively without limit. Nothing about the underlying bandwidth or routing is cheaper, so the saving is not universal, but the per-address component of the price collapses. Datacenter IPv6 plans bill on speed tier rather than metering addresses; Residential IPv6 launch terms are not yet published.
The practical consequence is that IPv6 changes what you can afford to do rather than just what you pay. Per-request rotation across billions of addresses is a reasonable default on IPv6 and an expensive luxury on IPv4. The catch is on the other side of the connection: the saving is only real if the target answers over IPv6.

What to check before buying IPv6 proxies
Test the actual targets, not the vendor's example. Run each destination through the IPv6 test and look at the per-host table, not just the verdict. A target that passes on its document host but pulls an IPv4-only analytics script may still be usable if you do not need that script to load, and completely unusable if the page builds its content from an IPv4-only CDN.
Check what your own stack does with IPv6. Some HTTP clients, container networks, and CI runners are IPv4-only by default or prefer IPv4 when both are available. An IPv6 proxy cannot help if the machine making the request never opens an IPv6 socket, and this is a common cause of a pool that appears not to work at all.
Decide whether datacenter or ISP origin matters before comparing prices. Datacenter IPv6 rotates on each new connection and can pin an address with a session token; Residential IPv6 is planned as rotating-only.
Finally, plan for a mixed fleet. Most operations that adopt IPv6 keep IPv4 for the targets that fail the test rather than replacing one with the other. The realistic outcome is that IPv6 absorbs the high-volume, IPv6-ready portion of the workload and IPv4 covers the rest.

How to connect to an IPv6 proxy

The one thing worth verifying explicitly is that your client resolves and connects over IPv6 end to end. In practice that means confirming the host running your collector has IPv6 connectivity, that your HTTP client is not pinned to an IPv4 address family, and that any container network in between forwards IPv6. Most IPv6 problems that look like proxy problems are actually one of those three.
Once traffic is flowing, validate against a target you have already tested rather than a generic IP echo service. A checker that reports your exit address tells you the proxy works; it does not tell you the destination you care about will render.
