Why use proxies in the United States
American storefronts are organized around ZIP codes as much as around the country. Prices on Amazon.com, Walmart.com and Target.com are shown before sales tax, and the tax added at checkout depends on the state, county and city of the delivery address, while pickup slots, delivery promises and in-store stock follow the nearest store. Checkouts in USD are card-first, with PayPal, Apple Pay and buy-now-pay-later plans from Affirm, Klarna and Afterpay common on retail sites. English dominates, but Spanish-language searches return their own results and ads, which matters in metros such as Miami, Houston and Los Angeles.
Beyond the big three retailers, teams usually watch eBay and Etsy for resale and counterfeit listings, Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace for local classifieds, Zillow, Realtor.com and Redfin for property, DoorDash, Uber Eats and Instacart for restaurant and grocery pricing, and Expedia and Kayak for fares and hotel rates. Many of these show different inventory, fees or delivery windows by metro area, so a check from Chicago does not stand in for one from Phoenix.
Google handles most searches, and its local pack, map results and Shopping ads change from city to city and between ZIP codes. Bing also powers much of Yahoo's and DuckDuckGo's results, so a ranking report usually covers both engines. There is no general federal privacy law: personal data falls under sector laws such as HIPAA and COPPA and a growing list of state laws led by the California Consumer Privacy Act of 2018, amended by the California Privacy Rights Act in 2020.
The US retail calendar is set by a few national dates and many state ones. Prime Day in July, and Amazon's October sale in recent years, pull Walmart and Target into competing events, while Black Friday and Cyber Monday follow Thanksgiving on the fourth Thursday of November. Memorial Day, the Fourth of July and Labor Day bring appliance, mattress and car promotions. Several states, including Texas and Florida, run back-to-school sales tax holidays that briefly change checkout totals in those states only, so a price series should flag holiday weekends and the state each check came from.
