Cayman runs on two currencies at once. The Cayman Islands dollar (KYD) has been fixed at US$1.20 since 1974, and shops, restaurants and hotels accept US dollars at 80 Cayman cents each, so listings switch between CI$ and US$, sometimes on the same page. Storefronts and search are in English. There is no sales tax or VAT; the cost that changes a checkout total is import duty, which is why households ordering from US stores compare the landed price with what Foster's, Kirk Market and Hurley's charge on the island.
eCaytrade is the best-known local classifieds site, with real estate, cars and boats, jobs and services, and property is also listed through the CIREBA multiple listing service. News and display advertising run through the Cayman Compass and Cayman News Service, with Radio Cayman as the public broadcaster. Travel is a large pricing category: Cayman Airways flies to Miami, Tampa, Kingston, La Ceiba and Panama City, US and Canadian airlines serve Grand Cayman from many cities, and British Airways flies from London, so Seven Mile Beach hotel and condo rates are usually compared together with fares.
Most activity is on Grand Cayman, around George Town, Seven Mile Beach and West Bay; Cayman Brac and Little Cayman are linked by Cayman Airways Express and have far fewer local services. Google dominates search, and results for local services differ from those seen from Miami, the nearest large market. Personal data falls under the Data Protection Act (2021 Revision), in force since 30 September 2019 and supervised by the Office of the Ombudsman.
The labour market leaves a clear online trail. Financial services, including investment funds, insurance, banking and the law and accounting firms that serve them, drive much of the skilled hiring, and many of those roles are filled on work permits. WORC, the government's Workforce Opportunities and Residency Cayman department, runs the JobsCayman portal, and its rules include a 21-day advertising requirement for vacancies. Job listings there, on eCaytrade and in the Cayman Compass therefore show which roles employers are recruiting for and the salaries they offer in CI$, which makes them a practical source for labour-market and relocation research.
