Offshore oil production in the Stabroek block began in December 2019, and prices in Georgetown have moved with it: rents, property, cars and hospitality now serve oil-sector companies and their staff as well as local buyers. Storefronts and search are in English, while Guyanese Creole dominates everyday speech and social video, and Guyanese Hindustani and Portuguese are heard in some communities. Prices are in Guyana dollars (GYD), with rents, property and many service contracts quoted in US dollars.
Local monitoring covers Stabroek News, Kaieteur News, the state-owned Guyana Chronicle, News Room and Demerara Waves for news and display advertising, and Courts and Giftland Mall for retail pricing. MMG, the mobile money service, handles bill payments and transfers for many households. Air fares matter: Cheddi Jagan International at Timehri now has direct flights from Miami, New York, Houston, Toronto, Panama City, Bogotá and London, while Ogle airport near Georgetown handles regional and interior flights. In the far south, Lethem faces Bonfim in Brazil across the Takutu River and works as a cross-border shopping town.
Google is the dominant search engine, and Georgetown results differ from those in Linden or New Amsterdam mainly in local packs. Guyana passed the Data Protection Act 2023 (Act No. 18 of 2023), but as of early 2026 the commencement order needed to bring it into force had not been issued.
Guyana's holiday calendar mixes Hindu, Muslim, Christian and national dates, and retail follows it. Mashramani, the Republic Day festival on 23 February, brings parades and costume spending in Georgetown; Phagwah in February or March and Diwali in October or November are public holidays with their own gift, clothing and food peaks; Eid ul-Adha and Youman Nabi follow the Islamic calendar; and Indian Arrival Day on 5 May, Emancipation Day on 1 August and CARICOM Day in early July fill the middle of the year. Christmas brings the heaviest shopping, centred on Regent Street and Stabroek Market in Georgetown.
