Market context

Why use proxies in Tanzania

Swahili is the working language of the Tanzanian web: news, classifieds, forums, social media and most advertising are in Kiswahili, while English appears on business, banking and tourism sites. Prices are in Tanzanian shillings (TZS), but safari operators and Zanzibar hotels usually quote US dollars. Mobile money is the default way to pay. M-Pesa from Vodacom, Mixx by Yas (formerly Tigo Pesa), Airtel Money and HaloPesa all take merchant payments, and aggregators such as Selcom connect them to online checkouts.

Jiji is the main general classifieds site, covering cars, phones and property in Dar es Salaam, Arusha, Mwanza and Dodoma. Travel pricing is its own market: Air Tanzania and Precision Air sell domestic flights, Azam Marine runs the ferries between Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar, and Zanzibar's hotels price separately from the mainland. For news and advertising, teams watch Mwananchi and The Citizen, the state-owned Daily News, the JamiiForums discussion site and Millard Ayo's news channels.

Swahili queries on Google, the dominant engine, return a different set of pages from English ones. Online publishers, bloggers and online TV channels need a licence from the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) under the online content regulations, which shapes which local sites and channels exist. Personal data falls under the Personal Data Protection Act, 2022 (Act No. 11 of 2022), in force since May 2023 and supervised by the Personal Data Protection Commission.

Overland travel in Tanzania is being repriced by rail. The electric Standard Gauge Railway, run by the Tanzania Railways Corporation, opened passenger services from Dar es Salaam to Morogoro in June 2024 and on to Dodoma in July 2024, with tickets sold at stations, online and through mobile money apps. Long-distance buses still dominate routes to Arusha, Mwanza and Mbeya, with maximum fares regulated by the Land Transport Regulatory Authority (LATRA). Within Dar es Salaam, the DART bus rapid transit system sets its own fares. Comparing train, bus and domestic flight prices on the Dar es Salaam–Dodoma route shows how the three now compete.

Tanzania proxy FAQ

Should I check Tanzania search rankings in Swahili or English?

Both, but start with Swahili. Most Tanzanian news, classifieds, forums and social content is written in Kiswahili, and Swahili queries return a different set of pages, including JamiiForums threads, Swahili news sites and local blogs, than the English version of the same search. English matters for tourism, banking and business services. Google is the dominant engine, so run both language versions from a Tanzanian connection and compare the two result sets.

How do Zanzibar prices differ from mainland Tanzania?

Zanzibar is semi-autonomous, with its own government and tourism authorities, and its hotels, tours and transfers are mostly priced in US dollars for visitors, while mainland shops and services price in TZS. Visitors reach the islands by Azam Marine ferry from Dar es Salaam or on domestic flights, and those fares are sold separately. Rate checks for Stone Town or the east coast beaches therefore need their own pass rather than a mainland average.

How does Tanzania compare with Kenya for market research?

The two share Swahili and M-Pesa, but the markets are built differently. Kenyan sites lean on English, Jumia still runs a Kenyan store, and M-Pesa dominates payments. Tanzania's web is far more Swahili, Jumia left in 2019, and payments are split across M-Pesa, Mixx by Yas, Airtel Money and HaloPesa. Prices are in different shillings, KES and TZS. Research built on Kenyan data will miss Tanzanian platforms, so run Tanzanian checks separately.
