Points programmes shape Japanese commerce: each domestic platform runs its own, so what a shopper effectively pays depends on the site and loyalty scheme as much as the list price in yen (JPY). Storefronts and search are overwhelmingly in Japanese, and prices must be displayed including consumption tax, with food taxed at a lower rate than other goods. Checkout goes well beyond cards: konbini payment at convenience stores, PayPay and other QR wallets, mobile carrier billing and cash on delivery all appear.
Rakuten Ichiba, Amazon.co.jp and Yahoo Shopping lead general retail, Mercari and Yahoo Auctions dominate second-hand sales, ZOZOTOWN is the main fashion mall and Kakaku.com is the standard price-comparison site. Travel teams follow Rakuten Travel and Jalan, restaurant visibility depends heavily on Tabelog, and property listings run through SUUMO and LIFULL HOME'S. LINE, the country's most used messaging app, sells its own ad placements and belongs to LY Corporation, the same group as Yahoo Japan. Japan's shopping calendar has its own fixed points. New Year opens with fukubukuro, sealed lucky bags sold by department stores, fashion brands and online shops, often reserved online in December. Summer ochugen and year-end oseibo are formal gift seasons when department store websites push catalogues of food and drink sets. Valentine's Day and White Day on 14 March drive chocolate sales, and Golden Week in late April and early May and Obon in mid-August are the peak travel weeks, when hotel and flight prices jump.
