Market context

Why use proxies in Mauritania

Two languages share Mauritania's web: Arabic, including the local Hassaniya dialect, leads in news and social media, and French remains common in business, banking and part of the press. Pulaar, Soninke and Wolof are national languages too, spoken mainly in the south. Prices are in the ouguiya (MRU), redenominated in 2018 when one new ouguiya replaced ten old ones, which is why listings still label prices as new ouguiya. Card payments are rare, and mobile wallets here are run by banks: Bankily, from Banque Populaire de Mauritanie, is one of them, and it became interoperable with other wallets in 2024.

There is no national online marketplace, so classifieds and news sites carry most of what teams monitor. Voursa, running since 2010, lists cars, electronics, property, fashion and furniture, mostly in Arabic with some French, and sellers are reached by WhatsApp. Among publishers, Cridem is a French-language portal, while Alakhbar and Sahara Medias are major Arabic news sites.

Google is the search engine in use. Arabic and French queries return separate sets of Mauritanian pages, and Arabic results also pull in Moroccan and Gulf sites, so ranking checks should cover both languages from Mauritanian connections. Personal data falls under Law No. 2017-020 of 22 July 2017 on the protection of personal data, supervised by the Autorité de protection des données à caractère personnel (APD).

Nouakchott, the capital, is home to most of Mauritania's online sellers and listings, but Nouadhibou, the second city, runs on different business. It is the country's main fishing port and the end of its only railway, which carries iron ore about 700 km from the mines near Zouérat and Fdérik. Atar and the Adrar, with the old caravan towns of Chinguetti and Ouadane, are the main tourist destinations, while the Senegal River valley around Rosso and Kaédi faces south toward Senegal. Searches for services, property and vehicles return different local results in each of these places, so checks should set the city rather than treat the country as one market.

Mauritania proxy FAQ

Should I check Mauritania rankings in Arabic or French?

Both. Arabic, including the Hassaniya dialect, leads in news and social media, with sites such as Alakhbar and Sahara Medias, while French remains the language of much business, banking and outlets such as Cridem. The two languages return different Mauritanian pages on Google, and Arabic queries also bring in Moroccan and Gulf results, so run each from Mauritanian connections and track them as separate keyword sets.

Why do listings in Mauritania say new ouguiya?

Mauritania redenominated its currency in 2018, replacing ten old ouguiya with one new ouguiya (MRU). Some people still count in the old unit, so classifieds sites such as Voursa label prices as new ouguiya to avoid a tenfold misunderstanding. When you collect prices from Mauritanian sites, check which unit a listing uses before comparing it with other markets or converting it to another currency.

Which sites should I monitor in Mauritania?

Start with Voursa, the long-running classifieds site for cars, electronics, property, fashion and furniture, where prices are quoted in new ouguiya and sellers are contacted by WhatsApp. Many shops also sell through public Facebook pages. For news and advertising, check Cridem in French and Alakhbar and Sahara Medias in Arabic. There is no national online marketplace, so these sites cover most of what is visible online.
