Bamako's online trade mostly runs in French, even though Mali's 2023 constitution demoted French to a working language and raised thirteen national languages, Bambara among them, to official status. Bambara is what buyers speak with sellers and hear on the radio, so a listing posted in French is often haggled over in Bamanankan. Money is the XOF franc issued by the BCEAO, which Mali kept after quitting ECOWAS in January 2025 alongside Burkina Faso and Niger. Orange Money, opened through Orange's Max it app, and Moov Africa Malitel's Moov Money are the usual ways to pay, and many Bamako couriers collect cash when a parcel arrives.
Unlike Dakar and Abidjan, Bamako has no Jumia storefront, so the visible marketplace is CoinAfrique's Malian listings, where phones, motorbikes, cars, plots of land and furniture are posted mostly from the capital, plus Facebook shops and WhatsApp catalogues kept by market traders. For news and display inventory, Maliweb and Malijet carry the day's Malian headlines, and Studio Tamani, a Fondation Hirondelle project, reports in French, Bambara, Songhay, Peulh and Tamasheq.
Google handles search. A French query typed in Bamako competes against pages from Dakar, Abidjan and Paris, so a ranking read taken outside Mali says little about where Malian firms actually sit. Mali's personal data statute, Law No. 2013-015, adopted in May 2013 and revised in 2017, makes consent the default before details are gathered or passed on, allows limited exceptions, and leaves enforcement to the APDP, the regulator it set up.
Household spending peaks around Tabaski, as Eid al-Adha is called across the Sahel: rams, new clothes and food are bought in the weeks before, when relatives working in Abidjan or France send extra money home. Ramadan and the feast that closes it give a second surge, and Maouloud draws large crowds in Bamako and Timbuktu. Exercise books and uniforms sell when classes resume in the autumn. Asking prices on CoinAfrique and in Facebook shops follow this calendar, so a fair comparison sets one Tabaski season against the previous one.
