Shopping, payment and search in Mayotte follow the French system, with rules of their own. French is the language of every storefront and official site, while most residents speak Shimaore or Kibushi at home, which shows up in local radio and social video rather than in online stores. Prices are in euros (EUR), yet French VAT does not apply in Mayotte, unlike La Réunion, so a product page built for the mainland or Réunion can show the wrong tax. Imports pay the octroi de mer instead, a local duty that has applied since Mayotte became an EU outermost region in 2014.
Many mainland retailers do not deliver to the island, or charge heavily for it, so residents often use forwarding addresses in mainland France, and checking which sites accept a Mayotte postcode (976) is a useful test. For news and advertising, the main outlets are Mayotte la 1ère from France Télévisions, Mayotte Hebdo, Le Journal de Mayotte and Kwezi. Travel pricing is concentrated on a few carriers: Air Austral flies to Paris and La Réunion, and Ewa Air covers the Comoros and Madagascar, so fares from Dzaoudzi–Pamandzi airport on Petite-Terre are worth tracking over time, especially since Cyclone Chido hit the island in December 2024.
Because few retailers are based on the island, French-language local queries on Google often return mainland and Réunion businesses instead. As part of France and the EU, Mayotte applies the GDPR alongside France's Loi Informatique et Libertés of 1978, supervised by the CNIL.
The island's geography splits its market. Grande-Terre holds Mamoudzou, the economic capital, with most shops, offices and delivery points, while Petite-Terre holds Dzaoudzi, Pamandzi and the airport, linked to Mamoudzou by a barge across the lagoon, so travel and delivery times between the two depend on the crossing. Villages in the north and south of Grande-Terre are farther from Mamoudzou's shops and have fewer retail options. Incomes also differ from the mainland: Mayotte has its own minimum wage (SMIC), set below the national rate, which matters when comparing basket prices, promotions and product ranges with mainland France or La Réunion.
