Payment choice and price comparison shape German online shopping: PayPal and purchase on invoice (Kauf auf Rechnung) sit beside cards at most checkouts, and looking up a product on Idealo or Check24 is a normal step before buying. Prices are in euros (EUR), storefronts are in German, and consent banners are standard on commercial sites, which changes what a first-time visitor sees before any content loads.
Amazon.de is the largest store, with Otto, Kaufland.de and MediaMarkt as the main domestic rivals and Zalando leading fashion. Otto and Kaufland.de also run open marketplaces, so the same product often appears from several sellers at different prices, and eBay.de remains large for new and used goods. Kleinanzeigen, known as eBay Kleinanzeigen until 2023, is the default classifieds site, ImmoScout24 is the largest property portal, and Lieferando and Wolt compete for restaurant delivery, while REWE and Knuspr deliver groceries in larger cities. Google dominates search, with Bing and the Berlin-based Ecosia as smaller alternatives. google.de results and local packs vary between cities, so checks for Berlin, Hamburg or Munich can return different shops and ads for the same query. Some German categories are priced or sold under rules that change what a visitor sees. Idealo is the main product price comparison site, and Check24 covers insurance, energy, travel and a large shopping section. Many German shoppers look up a product on one of them before buying, so a shop's position and price there can matter as much as on Amazon.de. Monitoring both from a German connection shows the shipping costs, payment options and dealer ratings German buyers see next to each offer.
Does Germany need its own ranking checks separate from Austria and Switzerland?
Yes. All three search in German, but google.de tends to favour German domains, local businesses and retailers such as Otto and MediaMarkt, while Austrian and Swiss searchers see their own shops and wording. A page ranking first in Vienna may sit much lower in Hamburg.
