Market context

Why use proxies in Switzerland

Three languages and a strong franc shape Swiss online retail. Stores run in German, French and Italian, sometimes on the same site, and price in Swiss francs (CHF) at levels well above neighbouring euro countries. Buyers pay with TWINT, the domestic mobile payment app, alongside cards and invoice. Orders from abroad carry Swiss VAT and customs handling, so a Swiss address can change a foreign shop's prices, shipping options or whether it delivers at all.

Amazon has no Swiss storefront and serves the country from Amazon.de, so Digitec Galaxus is the reference store for electronics and general goods, alongside Brack.ch and Zalando's Swiss site. Galaxus also sells in Germany and Austria, but its Swiss prices and stock are separate. Migros Online and Coop's online shop compete for grocery delivery. Ricardo runs auctions, tutti.ch and anibis.ch carry classifieds, Homegate and ImmoScout24 list property, and Comparis compares insurance, property and car offers. Just Eat and Smood deliver restaurant meals. 20 Minuten and Blick are among the largest news sites, and 20 minutes is the French-language edition for Romandie.

Google dominates search, and google.ch shows different results for the same product in German, French and Italian, with ads that follow the language region. Queries in French or Italian also compete with sites from France and Italy. Personal data falls under the revised Federal Act on Data Protection (FADP), a Swiss law separate from the EU's GDPR that has applied since 1 September 2023.

Swiss travel prices have quirks that foreign fare checks miss. SBB shows two prices for most train tickets, the full fare and a reduced fare for holders of the Half Fare travelcard, and it sells discounted Supersaver tickets whose prices change with demand, while the GA travelcard covers most public transport for its holders. EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg sits on French soil but has a Swiss sector, so booking sites list it under Basel, Mulhouse or Freiburg and travellers can leave into Switzerland or France. Checks for Swiss travellers should compare Zurich, Geneva and Basel departures and the rail fares that compete with short flights.

Switzerland proxy FAQ

Why are prices different for visitors in Switzerland than in Germany?

Swiss shops price in francs at Swiss cost levels, and foreign shops that deliver to Switzerland add Swiss VAT, customs handling or higher shipping, or run a separate Swiss catalogue. Some EU retailers do not ship to Switzerland at all. Amazon, for example, serves Swiss customers from Amazon.de and adds import charges at checkout. Checking from a Swiss connection shows the prices and delivery options a Swiss customer is actually offered.

Which language should I use for SEO checks in Switzerland?

All three main ones, depending on the market. German-speaking Switzerland, including Zurich, Basel and Bern, is the largest, but Geneva and Lausanne search in French and Ticino in Italian. google.ch returns Swiss retailers such as Digitec Galaxus or Brack.ch in all three, yet the local pack, comparison sites and ads change with the language. Pages targeting Romandie compete with French sites, and pages targeting Ticino with Italian ones.

How do people pay online in Switzerland?

Swiss shoppers mix TWINT, cards and payment by invoice, which many Swiss shops offer. PostFinance, the Swiss Post bank, issues its own PostFinance Card, which some Swiss shops accept at checkout. Invoices now carry a QR-bill, which replaced the old orange and red payment slips in 2022, so buyers pay by scanning it in their banking app. A Swiss checkout shows which of these options a shop offers and whether invoice payment carries a fee.

Does TrueProxies have residential proxies in Switzerland?
