Regional languages change what shoppers in Spain see online. Stores sell in euros (EUR) and Castilian Spanish, while regional sites and campaigns often add Catalan, Basque, Galician or Valencian versions for visitors in Barcelona, Bilbao, Santiago or Valencia. Bizum, the bank-to-bank mobile payment service, now sits beside cards at many checkouts. The Canary Islands, Ceuta and Melilla sit outside the EU VAT area, so many mainland shops charge more, show different stock or do not deliver there at all.
Amazon.es, which also serves many buyers in Portugal, competes with El Corte Inglés, PcComponentes and MediaMarkt, while Wallapop and Milanuncios lead second-hand sales. Wallapop is built around its mobile app, so checks should cover the app as well as the website. Idealista and Fotocasa are the reference for rents and property prices. Glovo, founded in Barcelona, competes with Just Eat and Uber Eats in food delivery, and Renfe, Iryo and Ouigo compete on high-speed rail fares. El País, El Mundo, 20minutos and Marca are among the biggest publishers for display campaigns.
Google dominates search, and google.es results shift between regions, with local packs changing by city and some queries returning Catalan-language pages in Catalonia. Spanish-language queries also compete with pages written for Mexico or Argentina, so checks from Spain show which local version wins. Spain's gift season runs later than in most of Europe. In many Spanish homes the Three Kings bring the main presents on 6 January, so toy and electronics demand stays high into the first week of the year, and the winter sales, las rebajas, traditionally begin on 7 January. Summer sales start around 1 July. Father's Day falls on 19 March, the feast of Saint Joseph, and Mother's Day on the first Sunday of May, each with its own gift promotions. Back-to-school campaigns, known as la vuelta al cole, fill late August and early September, when stationery, uniforms and laptops are discounted.
